Introductie

World Cleanup Day – Barranco de Fataga (Gran Canaria, Spain)

On 20 September 2025 we join World Cleanup Day with a large-scale action in the Barranco de Fataga, also known as the lifeline that connects the mountains with the sea in Maspalomas. This valley is a UNESCO-protected area of great ecological and cultural value. Unfortunately, plastic, glass, metal and bulky waste often accumulate here after heavy rains and tourism. Our mission is to protect this unique ecosystem together with local residents, international volunteers and the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana.

What we will do
Volunteers will walk different stretches of the barranco, collect waste and help separate it for recycling or safe disposal. Oceans4Life, our partner, will guide the safety briefing and explain how to handle materials responsibly.

What to bring
We provide gloves, collection bags, drinking water and basic first aid. Please bring:
– Sturdy closed shoes (rocky ground and uneven paths).
– Sun protection (hat, sunscreen).
– Your own reusable water bottle.
– A light snack for extra energy.

Safety and accessibility
The barranco has steep and rocky parts, so it is not recommended for small children or people with reduced mobility. Teenagers from 12 years upwards are welcome when accompanied by an adult. Safety instructions will be given at the start, and volunteers will work in pairs or groups.

Why it matters
By joining us, you help to:
– Keep plastic and waste out of the Atlantic Ocean.
– Protect biodiversity in a fragile natural reserve.
– Raise awareness about waste reduction and circular living.

Doe mee!
